Compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998
There are eight principles put in place by the Data Protection Act 1998 to make sure that your information is handled properly. They say that data must be:
fairly and lawfully processed;
processed for limited purposes;
adequate, relevant and not excessive;
accurate;
not kept for longer than is necessary;
processed in line with your rights;
secure;
not transferred to countries without adequate protection.
By law data controllers have to keep to these principles.
‘Not for profit’ organisations are exempt from notification (i.e. registration with the Information Commissioner) if their data storage and processing purposes satisfy certain criteria. Church administration is normally exempt, and the result of WCF’s assessment is that we meet the notification exemption criteria. However we are still obliged to observe the eight principles above.
